The City & the City
A well-written crime novel with a singularly fascinating central premise; the idea of two cities sharing the same physical space with a shadowy group overseeing daily life to ensure their complete logical separation from each other.The idea that two people could live right next door to each other 'grosstopically' and yet never have any contact as an entire city border separates them, along with the consequences that flow on from that, was brilliant conceived and executed. Nobody does strange and fantastic settings quite like Mieville does.
